New research reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications should be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural support.
